Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
- Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with at least five years of verified practice in the U.S.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA residencies are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and are appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Additional Requirement: Must meet educational requirements for a Cardiologist for Federal employment and credentialing.
- Preferred Experience: Experience working as a Cardiologist.
- Physical Requirements: In accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Duties
- Provide comprehensive patient care as a Cardiologist, including inpatient and outpatient services and surgery.
- Accept consults from primary care and specialty clinics.
- Accountable to the Chief of Cardiology.
- Document interventions and review health team documentation.
- Recognize complex situations and intervene appropriately.
- Evaluate programs and activities using professional standards.
- Develop and lead interdisciplinary teams to improve performance.
- Identify and address impediments to healthcare delivery.
- Establish measurable goals based on patient population and diagnoses.
- Track and analyze care delivery issues.
- Develop and implement standards of practice and care.
- Maintain effective communication with patients, families, and the health team.
