Description
The Physician Assistant assists, monitors, and manages the day-to-day needs of patients as requested by, in conjunction with, and under the supervision of a physician. Performs the duties and responsibilities of a Physician Assistant according to customary and generally accepted medical standards.
PA experience needed, minimum of 2 years—preferably orthopedic experience.
Responsibilities
- Obtains a detailed and accurate history, identifies problems, and presents information to the supervising physician.
- Charts via written, dictation, or electronic means: admission notes, history and physical examinations, consultations, daily patient encounter notes, urgent evaluation notes, minor procedure notes, and brief post-operative notes for inpatient or outpatient settings; presents this information to the supervising physician.
- Prescribes medications in accordance with federal and state laws under supervision of a licensed physician, with approval from the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners. Prescribes controlled substances only with current state CDS license and DEA number, signing with their own name and license number, as well as the supervising physician.
- Assists a supervising surgeon in the operating room when a qualified assistant physician is not required, and a second assistant is deemed necessary by the surgeon.
- Assists supervising physician in a procedure room when a qualified physician is present and deemed that a qualified assistant is not needed.
- Writes post-operative/post-procedure notes and orders for supervising physician.
- Acts as the first line responsible for post-procedure management of patients as requested by the primary physician.
- Starts IVs, inserts Foley catheters and nasogastric tubes, irrigates Foley catheters, orders transfusions, performs venipuncture, and debridements.
- Exhibits organizational, communication, leadership skills, initiative, accountability, responsibility, judgment, and decision-making.
- Assists supervising physician with office hours, manages prescription prior authorizations, and resolves patient message issues requiring clinical support.
- Participates in research trials, collecting, aggregating, and entering data.
- Identifies the needs of the patient population and modifies care accordingly, communicating with patients, parents, and caregivers at their level.
- Functions as a resource to healthcare personnel and participates in educational programs.
- Greets patients and visitors courteously, making them feel welcome and responding promptly to needs.
- Adheres to the hospital's organizational competencies, mission, vision, infection control, and safety policies.
- Performs all duties in accordance with hospital standards and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Successful completion of an accredited physician assistant program. Required: Physician Assistant License, Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification. Preferred: Additional licenses and certifications as applicable.
