Job summary

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to provide primary health care services to inmates and staff. The selected candidate will join our team of physicians, PAs, NPs, and other health care professionals in a correctional setting.

Starting wages are $58.846/hour for PAs and $60.428/hour for NPs, with a path to clinical excellence and ongoing training within a fully paid Corrections Training Program upon hire.

Qualifications

• PA: Graduation from an AMA-approved Physician Assistant program or passed the National Commission Certification examination.
• NP: RN license and NP certification in Nebraska; NP program completion.

The NDCS is seeking to hire a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to provide primary health care services. Selected candidate will be joining our staff of Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care professionals.

Starting wage for Physician Assistant $58.846/hour

Starting wage for Nurse Practitioner $60.428/hour

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Physician Assistant: Graduation from an American Medical Association approved Physician Assistant program or have passed the National Commission Certification examination; supervisory experience helpful.

Nurse Practitioner: Successful completion of an accredited program for Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. Incumbents must have a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse and be certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Nebraska.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working as a Physician Assistant within a clinical setting or equivalent experience. Work experience as a Physician Assistant in a correctional or institutional setting. Current CPR/ALCS certification preferred (required within one year of hire).

Other

Certification and current license as a Physician Assistant in the State of Nebraska. Must possess a valid driver's license. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: Life Sciences including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Histology, and Embryology; the use and effect of modern drugs; primary care medicine as outlined by the Nebraska State Board of Medical Examiners for Physician Assistants.

Skill in: Interacting effectively with interdisciplinary teams toward proving medical care; clinical assessments and differential diagnosis; physical examination; basic CPR; interpreting laboratory data and x-rays; performing minor surgery; proctoscopy; the treatment of non-displaced fractures and casting; documenting observations and diagnosis.

Ability to: Gain confidence and cooperation of patients, the medical staff, and students; initiate primary care for patients when necessary; communicate orally and in writing with patients, family members and/or guardians, nurses, team members, and other medical staff; react effectively to medical and psychiatric emergencies
