Job summary

South Dakota Department of Corrections (Clinical Services) is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join the Rapid City Minimum Facility on a part-time basis (~24 hours per week). The role provides routine and emergency medical care, on-call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of offenders in a correctional clinical setting.

The selected candidate must hold SD licensure as a PA or NP and demonstrate strong primary care skills, professional communication, and the ability to work

Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant or Certified Nurse Practitioner in South Dakota.
  • Ability to provide direct patient care and manage acute/ chronic conditions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration with colleagues and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform medical examinations and diagnose conditions.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests and prescribe medications.
  • Provide on-site care for a daily offender caseload and chronic care.
  • Participate in on-call schedule and assist other units as needed.
  • Educate patients on preventive health and maintain medical records.

Job Summary

Position: Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner – part‑time, approximately 24 hours per week at the Rapid City Minimum Facility. Department: South Dakota Department of Corrections (Clinical Services). Salary will be based on experience. Pay grade: MF. The position provides routine and emergency medical care, on‑call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of offenders in a correctional clinical setting.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct medical/physical examinations
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests and diagnose medical conditions
  • Prescribe medications and treatment
  • Educate patients about preventive health care
  • Ensure minor medical procedures are performed on site
  • Provide medical services to a daily patient caseload, including chronic care, sick‑call, emergencies, and routine physicals
  • Participate in the on‑call schedule and provide on‑site assistance to other DOC clinical units and facilities when staffing needs arise
  • Provide instruction, demonstration, and training to other health‑care professionals
  • Provide medical advice to other organizational units or health‑care specialties through consultation regarding patients or protocols
  • Ensure that computer data entry, referrals and consultations, medical reporting, medical co‑signature, and offender grievance requirements are completed in accordance with DOC policies, procedures, and clinical standards
  • Maintain problem lists and M‑Code ratings in offenders’ health records, identify, apply, and update housing and work restrictions, and obtain authorization for consultations, diagnostic procedures and surgeries
  • Attend quarterly medical review board meetings, monthly physician meetings, and other division meetings as assigned
Licenses and Certification
  • Must be licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant or Certified Nurse Practitioner in the State of South Dakota

  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language
  • Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment
  • Experience in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine
  • Experience managing chronic medical conditions as a mid‑level provider
Conditions of Employment

All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen, and the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Selected candidates must complete a written and practical self‑defense exam, pass CPR to AHA guidelines, and demonstrate the physical ability required for self‑defense tasks. Tuberculosis screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
