Job summary

Kids for the Future is seeking a Physician Assistant to provide high-quality orthopedic outpatient and surgical care at OrthoConnecticut. The PA will maintain an independent office schedule with physician on-site support and participate in both clinic and operating room duties.

The role includes pre- and post-operative care, first assisting in surgeries, and coordinating imaging and treatment plans with the medical team. Connecticut licensure and NCCPA certification are required.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
• Master's degree in Physician Assistant studies preferred.
• Current NCCPA certification.
• Connecticut PA license.
• Orthopedic clinical experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an independent office schedule with physician support on-site.
• Work with Upper Extremity Surgeon in office and OR about two days weekly.
• Assist in OR two additional days weekly.
• First assist in surgical procedures across sports, spine, upper extremity, joints.
• Provide preoperative and postoperative patient care and education.
• Order and interpret imaging as per protocols.
• Perform joint injections, aspirations, casting, bracing.
• Document care in EMR accurately and timely.
• Maintain credentials and privileges at two surgery centers and two hospitals.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

The Physician Assistant provides high-quality orthopedic outpatient and surgical care at OrthoConnecticut. The Physician Assistant will maintain an independent office schedule while working collaboratively with physicians and the broader healthcare team. A physician will be available on premises for support as needed.

The position includes evaluation and treatment of new patients and new conditions, pre- and post-operative care, office-based orthopedic procedures, and surgical first-assisting responsibilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES / WORK REQUIREMENTS

• Maintain an independent office schedule with a physician available on premises for support as needed, including evaluation and treatment of new patients, new conditions, and pre- and post-operative patients.
• Work approximately two days per week with an Upper Extremity Surgeon in both the office and operating room.
• Work approximately three additional days per week either first assisting in the operating room or providing orthopedic clinical care in the office.
• First assist in surgical procedures with various surgeons within the practice, including sports medicine, spine, upper extremity, and total joint procedures.
• Participate in surgical cases and provide appropriate pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including X-rays and MRIs, consistent with scope of practice and established clinical protocols.
• Perform orthopedic office-based procedures, including joint injections, aspirations, casting, splinting, and bracing.
• Conduct patient assessments, develop appropriate treatment plans, and monitor patient progress.
• Prescribe medications, braces, and other orthopedic devices responsibly and within the scope of practice.
• Provide patient education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, medications, rehabilitation, and follow-up care.
• Accurately and timely document all patient care and clinical information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
• Maintain appropriate credentials and clinical privileges at two surgery centers and two hospitals, as required by the position.
• Communicate effectively with physicians, clinical staff, patients, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all applicable clinical, legal, regulatory, and organizational requirements.
• Demonstrate sound clinical judgment and professional composure in emergent or stressful situations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or required by the position.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

• Education:
  Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A master's degree in Physician Assistant studies is preferred.
• Experience:
  Previous orthopedic experience is preferred but not required. Strong candidates without previous orthopedic experience may be considered for training.
• CERTIFICATION / LICENSURE
• Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
• Current Physician Assistant license issued by the State of Connecticut.
• Current certification in any additional credentials required by the practice, hospitals, or surgery centers.
• Continuing education and other credentials as required to maintain active certification, licensure, and clinical privileges.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision.
