Job summary

Boston Medical Center is seeking a Physician Assistant to independently manage orthopedic outpatients, including spine, joints, hand, sports, and trauma. Under supervision of the Chief PA, attending physicians, and Operations Director, the PA will perform complete workups and contribute to care planning.

The role requires a master’s degree, ARC-PA accredited PA program, MA licensure eligibility, NCCPA eligibility, and license registration.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree from ARC-PA accredited PA program.
• Eligible for Massachusetts PA licensure with NCCPA certification upon hire.
• NCCPA PANCE eligibility.
• Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and DEA Registration.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care, counseling and teaching in ambulatory and inpatient settings.
• Perform history and physicals; interpret labs and diagnostics.
• Develop differential diagnoses and management plans for orthopedic conditions.
• Assist in surgeries when delegated by the surgeon.
• Coordinate patient care plans with other departments.
• Document treatment plans and maintain confidential records.
• Participate in pre- and post-operative orders and medication reconciliation.
• Support research and educational programs for professional development.

POSITION SUMMARY

Physician Assistant responsible for providing complete, independent workup of all orthopedic conditions in an outpatient setting. Preferred experience in orthopedics including spine, joints, hand, sports, and trauma related conditions. The PA works under the general supervision of the Chief Physician Assistant, attending physician, and Operations Director and is responsible for independent workup of all orthopedic conditions in an outpatient clinic setting.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

• Provide direct care, counseling and teaching to a designated patient population in ambulatory, inpatient, operative and/or procedural settings.
• Perform comprehensive and problem‑focused history and physical examination; interpret and correlate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
• Formulate differential and working diagnoses and develop management plans for orthopedic problems within scope of practice.
• Implement therapeutic interventions and exercise judgment regarding consultation or referral when needed.
• Order, collect, and perform appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures, including EMG, ECG, compartment pressure measurements, special X‑rays, CT, MRI, and bone scans.
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as joint and bursa aspirations, closed reductions, injections, bracing, cast, and splint applications.
• Document treatment plans, write orders and referrals, and maintain accurate, confidential patient medical records.
• Participate in pre‑operative and post‑operative ordering and medication reconciliation.
• Assist in surgeries (first assist, tissue closures, appliance application) as delegated by the surgeon.
• Facilitate communication with other departments, coordinate patient care plans, and ensure delivery of cost‑effective, efficient care.
• Serve as faculty support, monitoring patient requests via calls, MyChart, and paperwork.
• Engage in inpatient orthopedic care, discharge planning, medication reconciliation, and bedside procedures.
• Participate in weekly staff meetings, monthly grand rounds, and daily huddles.
• Assist with research projects and educational programs for professional development.
• Maintain compliance with NCQA, The Joint Commission, and federal and state regulations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

Qualified Physician Assistants must hold at least a master’s degree and be a graduate of a PA Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC‑PA) or its predecessor.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

• National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA) PANCE eligibility.
• Eligibility for PA licensure in the State of Massachusetts with documentation of Massachusetts PA license and initial NCCPA certification upon hire.
• Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration.

EXPERIENCE

• 2+ years experience in an orthopedic setting highly preferred.
• 1+ years experience managing patients independently preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Self‑directed, demonstrating initiative and professionalism.
• Expert clinical judgment to function independently.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English.
• Problem‑solving and conflict resolution skills.
• Interest or expertise in caring for diverse populations with varying levels of health literacy.

COMPENSATION

Estimated range: $112,000.00 – $162,500.00. Compensation is based on education, experience, skills, certifications, and market competitiveness.
