Boston Medical Center seeks a Physician Assistant for our Orthopedic Surgery outpatient clinic in Boston. This full-time role focuses on independent workups, diagnoses, and treatment planning across spine, joints, hand, sports, and trauma, with opportunities to assist in surgery and perioperative care.

The PA will order and interpret tests, educate patients and families, and coordinate care with the team under supervision of senior clinicians. Massachusetts license and NCCPA eligibility required.

Position Summary

Physician Assistant responsible for providing complete independent workup of all orthopedic conditions in an outpatient setting. Preferred experience in Orthopedics including spine, joints, hand, sports, and trauma related conditions.

Under the general supervision of the Chief Physician Assistant, Attending physician and Operations Director, the Physician Assistant is responsible for independent workup of all orthopedic conditions in an outpatient clinic setting. The role includes initial and follow-up evaluation of orthopedic related complaints, formulating diagnoses and treatment plans, ordering and interpreting lab tests and diagnostic studies, prescribing medications, assisting in surgery or invasive procedures, rounding on admitted patients, counseling patients and families, and performing pre-operative and other patient care duties.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

• Provides direct care, counseling and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative and/or procedure setting.
• Performs comprehensive and problem‑focused history and physical examination, interprets and correlates laboratory and diagnostic procedures, formulates differential and working diagnoses, and establishes management plans for orthopedic problems within scope of practice.
• Orders, collects, and performs appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures, including blood, tissue specimens, EMG, ECG, compartment pressure measurements, special x‑rays, CT, MRI, and bone scans.
• Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections, bracing, cast and splint applications.
• Presents and discusses findings with Attending Physician to determine treatment plan, documents the plan, and writes orders and referrals.
• Coordinates patient care plans, facilitates communication with other departments, and ensures the delivery of efficient patient care.
• Under attending physician countersignature, produces pre‑operative and postoperative orders as authorized by law and protocol.
• Writes orders for admitted patients, including medication, labs, diagnostic and therapeutic tests, and nursing activities; may write prescription orders for narcotics, stimulants, depressants, investigational medications, and pre/post‑operative orders.
• Rounds on patients, writes progress reports, and educates patients/families on preventive care and treatment options.
• Maintains accurate and confidential patient medical records, including evaluations, follow‑ups, incidents, and progress notes.
• Provides pre‑operative services including H&P and SAFE protocol clearances and hospital level activities.
• Facilitates transitions of care, medication reconciliation, follow‑up arrangements, and discharge summaries.
• Assists in surgery, first assist, tissue closures, appliance application, wound vac set‑up, and clinic casting‑splinting.
• Provides independent clinical sessions as needed and adheres to NCQA, TJC, and state regulations.
• Engages in inpatient orthopedic care, patient discharge planning, rounds, bedside procedures, and coordination with social work and case management.
• Attends weekly staff meetings, monthly grand rounds, daily huddles, and aids research projects.
• Orders and dispenses orthopedic devices (durable medical equipment) as allowed by state legislation.
• Pursues professional growth via educational programs, workshops, and maintaining industry knowledge.
• Maintains patient confidentiality and follows hospital standards of performance, conduct, and infection control.
• Performs additional duties related to patient care and practice operations as required.

Education and Certifications

• Master’s degree and graduate of a PA Program accredited by ARC‑PA (or predecessor).

Licensing and Registration Requirements

• NCCPA PANCE eligibility and eligibility for PA licensure in Massachusetts.
• Documentation of Massachusetts PA license and initial NCCPA certification required upon hire.
• Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration required.

Experience

• 2+ years experience in an orthopedic setting preferred.
• 1+ year experience managing patients independently preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

• Self‑directed, initiative‑driven, professional, and able to exercise expert clinical judgment independently.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English required to convey complex medical information.
• Exceptional problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution skills preferred.
• Interest in caring for diverse patient populations with varying health literacy encouraged.

Compensation Range

$112,000.00 – $162,500.00

This range is an estimate based on minimum job qualifications and is determined by education, experience, skills, certifications, internal equity, and market competitiveness.
