Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment initiative. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria outlined by VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after reviewing the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to reapply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be considered for referral and tentative selection but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled. Current VA-employed physicians who met initial appointment standards under previous qualification standards are considered to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizen candidates are unavailable, per VA Policy.
- Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- The degree must be from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of graduation.
- Current, full, and unrestricted medical or surgical license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency Training: Completion of an approved residency program in a core specialty leading to board eligibility, approved by the VA Secretary.
- (Note: VA academic physicians may need to be board certified for faculty status.)
- Eligible residency programs include those approved by ACGME, AOA, or other programs deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee, with at least five years of verified practice in the U.S.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA residencies who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Residents Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and are appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
- PRPs are not independent practitioners and do not have privileges; they perform certain duties under supervision. Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

Duties
- The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Full-Time Physician (Anesthesiology).
- The incumbent will be Board-Eligible or Board-Certified in Anesthesiology, responsible for patient care at the Medical Center and community clinics.
- The physician will provide team-based care supported by nursing, clerical staff, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, and nutritionists.
- The Medical Center is an academic tertiary care facility with inpatient units, a nursing home, and a spinal cord injury unit, affiliated with Mount Sinai and Columbia University.
- The anesthesia service supports multiple operating rooms and procedural suites, covering various surgical disciplines and diagnostic procedures.
- The physician will follow established guidelines, policies, and protocols of the Department of Anesthesiology, VHA, and the profession.
- The scope includes perioperative anesthetic care, supervision of staff and trainees, and administrative duties such as documentation and program development.
- The role involves providing patient education, ensuring compliance standards, and participating in on-call duties during nights and weekends.
