Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be tentatively referred and selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those by ACGME, AOA, or other programs deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA residencies are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Duties

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Full-Time Physician in Anesthesiology. Responsibilities include providing care to patients at the Medical Center and outpatient clinics, supporting a team-based care approach with nursing, clerical staff, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists, and nutritionists.

The Medical Center is an academic tertiary care facility affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Vagelos School of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. The anesthesia service supports multiple operating rooms and procedural suites, providing a wide range of surgical and interventional procedures.

The Physician (Anesthesiology) will:

  • Provide perioperative anesthetic care, including pre-operative assessment, intraoperative management, and post-anesthesia care, complying with national standards.
  • Supervise nurse practitioners and anesthesia residents, and train staff in intubation procedures.
  • Consult and guide CRNA, nursing, and other medical staff in anesthesia practices.
  • Complete documentation, participate in program planning, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support ongoing education and training requirements.
  • Participate in on-call duties during nights and weekends.
