Job summary

The Neurologic Residency Program at UPMC provides practicing therapists with advanced training in examination, evaluation, clinical decision making and neurologic treatment interventions. The program runs 12 consecutive months, beginning in August.

Rotations include inpatient at UPMC Mercy, acute inpatient observation at UPMC Presbyterian, and outpatient sites at UPMC Monroeville and UPMC Lemieux Sports Medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Performs physical therapy assessment, reassessment and treatment and supervises physical therapist assistants in the treatment of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients referred by a physician to the clinic
  • Develops plan of care including goals and treatment plan in accordance with physician referral, nature of injury/illness and results of physical therapy assessment
  • Modifies or adjusts plan of care based on patient's response to treatment and/or changes in patient's status
  • Maintains written documentation for all physical therapy services rendered including documentation of initial assessment, follow-up visits, and discharge summary consistent with department standards
  • Co-signs physical therapist assistant documentation biweekly
  • Provides verbal and/or written home instructions to patient and/or family members when applicable
  • Communicates patient's status to the referring physician and other health care team members
  • Schedules patients to achieve and maintain a level of productivity which meets or exceeds the standard established for the facility by the organization while ensuring delivery of quality patient care

Job description

The Neurologic Residency Program is designed to provide practicing therapists with advanced training in examination, evaluation, clinical decision making and neurologic treatment interventions.The program runs 12 consecutive months, beginning in August.Additionally, the program places an emphasis in utilizing research and the literature to maintain practice within the scope of evidence-based therapy.The program is funded by UPMC Rehabilitation Institute and housed within several of our clinics.The inpatient rehabilitation rotation is housed within UPMC Mercy, the acute inpatient observation is housed within UPMC Presbyterian, and the outpatient rotation is split between our UPMC Monroeville and UPMC Lemieux Sports Medicine clinics.The program has been designed to advance the competent physical therapist through education, research, and professional service into a board-certified clinical specialist in neurologic physical therapy. In addition to advanced coursework and mentoring, the resident with attend grand rounds, journal clubs, become APTA Basic CI certified and attend the annual APTA Combined Sections Meeting.Moreover, the resident will be enrolled as adjunct faculty at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Physical Therapy, where they will participate in the instruction of Doctoral of Physical Therapy students.
