Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

Assists Physical Therapist with all patient treatments for in-patients, outpatients, and contract services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. The Physical Therapist Assistant will carry a regular patient caseload under the supervision of the Licensed Physical Therapist, performing prescribed patient treatments after the patient evaluation by the Physical Therapist.
2. Communicates regularly with the supervising PT regarding patient treatment plans and progress.
3. The PTA must collaborate with the PT on:
1. Data collection for patient re-evaluation
2. Recommendations for treatment adjustments
3. Assisting with data collection for progress and discharge notes in the medical chart
4. Guides activities of aides and families concerning patient treatment and conducts in-service education or training for healthcare personnel and families.
5. Assists with general cleaning of the treatment area, supplies, and equipment used for patient care.
6. Promotes education and professional development.
7. Uses effective communication within the rehabilitation department and across departments to enhance team collaboration.
8. Maintains 85% productivity.
9. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a clinical rehabilitation setting and resident rooms, requiring contact with staff, physicians, families, and the public. The role involves walking up to 95% of the workday and requires the ability to lift, push, pull, and move up to 50 pounds. Finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and normal vision and hearing are necessary.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

Requires knowledge of Physical Therapy typically obtained through a two-year degree from an accredited school for Physical Therapist Assistants. Must possess a New York State license or temporary license to practice. Skills needed include effective chart review, patient communication, procedure implementation, and documentation. Interpersonal skills are essential for accurate communication with patients and families, understanding patient condition changes, and reporting to supervisors.
