Summary
The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is seeking a qualified and dependable Lab Assistant to support hands‑on learning activities in PTA laboratory courses. The Lab Assistant will work under the direction of program faculty to help prepare the laboratory environment, support students during supervised practice, and promote safe and effective use of equipment and instructional materials. This temporary, semester‑based position is well suited for a licensed Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant who is interested in contributing to the education and professional development of future PTA clinicians.
Essential Role Responsibilities
- Prepare laboratory spaces, equipment, supplies, treatment areas, and instructional materials before scheduled lab sessions.
- Assist faculty during laboratory demonstrations, skills practice, simulations, and student learning activities.
- Provide students with supervised opportunities to practice psychomotor skills while reinforcing faculty instructions, course expectations, and appropriate clinical techniques.
- Monitor student safety and appropriate use of equipment during laboratory activities.
- Assist with cleaning, disinfecting, organizing, and securing laboratory equipment and supplies following each session.
- Help maintain an orderly, professional, and clinically appropriate laboratory environment.
- Demonstrate professional behavior, communication, and patient‑centered care consistent with physical therapy practice standards.
- Report equipment concerns, supply needs, safety issues, or student concerns to the supervising faculty member.
- Maintain student privacy and confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and institutional policies.
- Perform other laboratory support duties as assigned by the PTA Program Director or course faculty.
Experience Required
- Current Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant license.
- Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant program.
- Minimum of one‑year full‑time clinical experience as a Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant.
- Demonstrated competence in foundational physical therapy procedures and patient care skills.
- Ability to safely operate and assist students with physical therapy equipment and laboratory activities.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
- Commitment to maintaining a respectful, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
- Current or recent clinical experience as a Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant.
- Previous experience supervising, mentoring, educating, or supporting PTA students.
- Familiarity with contemporary physical therapy practice, documentation, safety standards, and infection‑control procedures.
- CPR certification.
- Experience and/or specialty in one or more clinical practice areas, including orthopedic, neurological, acute care, rehabilitation, or outpatient physical therapy.
Physical Demand Summary
- Stand and move throughout extended laboratory sessions.
- Assist with patient positioning, transfers, gait activities, and equipment setup.
- Demonstrate or support physical therapy techniques.
- Lift, move, or arrange laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Perform duties requiring appropriate body mechanics and physical mobility.
