Job Summary:

Position is located in the Physical Therapy Department (PTSC), a division of Primary Care Partners (PCP). The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) provides treatment that promotes the prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical and psychosocial dysfunction. The PTA administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by a Physical Therapist, but must be able to carry out a general treatment plan without the direct involvement of a Physical Therapist.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receives and interprets requests or instructions for procedures from the physical therapist or physician.
    • Plans and implements specialized treatment programs and applies physical therapy procedures to patients under the general supervision of a physical therapist.
  • Completes a preliminary review/examination of patient data (including medical history), compiles and organizes pertinent information, and develops/presents a patient profile to be used in assessing patients status.
    • Assists with or renders a course of treatment based on the assessed needs of the patient, developing progressive types of physical therapy treatment programs. This is done in consultation with a physical therapist or physician.
  • Assists therapist in development of a comprehensive specialized treatment plan that includes long- and short-term goals.
    • Persuades and motivates patient and family members to participate in treatment plans and comply with indicated regimens and post-discharge activities.
    • Interacts with the patient and family regarding goals for treatment.
  • Assists in the performance of, or independently performs, highly specialized and diversified treatment procedures.
    • Utilizes the full range of modalities including heat, cold, ultrasound, electricity, and manual/massage.
    • Administers non-complex active and passive therapeutic exercise.
    • Fits, adjusts, and instructs patients in the use of orthotics.
    • Instructs, motivates, and assists patients to learn activities of daily living and improve functional activities.
    • Prepares and maintains appropriate equipment and supplies required for these treatments.
  • Responsible for maintaining open communication with patients, families, staff and others.
    • Seeks clarification, listens and conveys information clearly, in written and verbal forms.
    • Investigates and responds appropriately to all complaints and takes effective corrective action when necessary.
    • Demonstrates the ability to identify and resolve interpersonal or professional conflicts when dealing with patients and members of the organization. Communicates effectively with our patients and recognizes/reports potential cases of patient abuse.
    • Demonstrates tact, courtesy and a positive approach to communication and interaction with other employees, visitors, physicians, and the public. Presents the program, service, and care in a positive manner.
    • Maintains confidentiality of patient medical records according to established policy.
    • Follows the Standards of Ethical Conduct as defined in regulations and practice guidelines/laws
  • Maintains a safe work environment to include non-technical maintenance of equipment, safety checks, cleaning, stocking, etc.
    • Develops safe work habits to prevent injury to patients, co-workers and self. Reports to supervisory Physical Therapist the need for equipment or items necessary for patient treatment.
    • Maintains a high level of competence through participation in continuing education programs. Assists with the supervision and training of student physical therapy assistants, volunteers, work students and other healthcare practitioners.
  • Consults with staff and physicians through patient presentations, attendance at interdisciplinary patient care conferences and/or specialty clinics.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Supervisory Controls:

The employee works under the authority of the Supervising Physical Therapist. Administratively, the Supervisory Therapist assigns work by defining objectives, priorities, and deadlines and provides guidance on therapy assignments that do not have clear precedents. The completed work is reviewed periodically for appropriateness, conformance, to the therapy departments policies and requirements and effectiveness in meeting goals.

The employee provides all routine clinical activities under the general supervision of a Licensed Physical Therapist, Therapist of Record. All therapy notes and consults generated by the assistant are reviewed and co-signed by a Licensed Physical Therapist.

The PTA independently selects and adapts the procedures and techniques to be used, documents process and outcome in the patients medical record and modifies programming based on the findings of the reassessment in accordance with previous training or accepted practices.

The PTA independently documents all patient care rendered and initiates consults for appropriate patient care equipment inherent to the physical therapy scope of practice. All patient care documentation will be reviewed and co-signed by a licensed Physical Therapist.

Customer Services:

Meets the needs of customers while supporting PTSC/PCP missions. Consistently communicates and treats all customers in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.

Computer Security:

Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, HIPPA guidelines. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc.

Uses word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, activating printers, inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail.

Work Experience and Qualifications

  • PTAs must graduate from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program and licensure or certification is required in most states in which a PTA works
  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal requirements
  • Ensures compliance with APTA documents including Practice Act, Code of Ethics, Guide for Professional Conduct
  • Ensures that services are consistent with mission, purposes and goals of physical therapy services
  • Maintain and follow policies and procedures outlined by PTSC/PCP

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is an Exempt full-time position. Works primarily four days a week, Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Expected hours of work may change at any time with or without notice.

Works in a well-lighted and ventilated office and gym; sitting, standing and walking; some light to heavy lifting, frequent interruptions during business hours

The physical demands descripted here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This is primarily a standing role with significant physical manipulation, some walking around the office and gym with some light to heavy lifting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Additional physical demands include:

  • This position requires frequent bending and lifting, and the ability to assist patients with a variety of therapeutic activities.
  • Employee must be able to lift 50 pounds to the chest height and maintain good body mechanics.
  • Employee must be able to sit and provide computer input frequently
  • Employee must be able to squat, kneel, bend frequently during course of the day
