Description

The Physical Therapist Assistant reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Under the direction of a licensed physical therapist, the Physical Therapist Assistant administers treatment for patients by selecting appropriate techniques and therapies to restore function and prevent disability.

Responsibilities
  • Selects and administers appropriate physical therapy treatment plans, provides patient, family, and caregiver education.
  • Collaborates with licensed physical therapists on patient discharge planning.
  • Maintains clear and concise patient care documentation as per departmental standards.
  • Supervises support personnel appropriately.
  • Provides direct patient care for approximately 65% of work hours.
  • Identifies the need for licensed physical therapist’s intervention through evaluations and re-evaluations.
  • Follows through with care treatment plans and completes related medical documentation timely and accurately.
  • Assists in monitoring quality management indicators.
  • Demonstrates competency through annual written and/or demonstration-style assessments.
Leadership/Supervisory Skills
  • Delegates responsibilities to support staff appropriately.
  • Promotes NMH and Rehabilitation Services philosophy and objectives.
  • Presents at least one inservice annually for staff or department.
  • Completes special assignments as directed by management.
Communication/Relationships
  • Communicates effectively with physical therapists regarding patient care.
  • Maintains open communication with nursing, social work, and other internal contacts.
  • Participates in mentorship programs and interdisciplinary rounds.
Organizational Expectations
  • Follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to the Code of Ethics, Customer Service Standards, and Patients First mission through positive interactions and meeting developmental goals.
Additional Functions
  • Supervises students within clinical education guidelines.
  • Participates in departmental leadership committees.
Work Environment
  • Works with potential risks requiring safety precautions, proper equipment use, and compliance with safety regulations.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Physical Therapy Assistant License, Illinois
  • Illinois Department of Professional Regulation registration
  • Associate of Science Degree in Physical Therapy
  • Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association)
