Responsibilities

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA, LPTA) performs treatments, provides exercise instruction, and patient education aimed at improving or enhancing the patient's well-being, following the established plan of care.

  • Follow all state laws governing physical therapy in home care, perform only procedures qualified and trained for, and make recommendations for plan of care changes to the supervising PT.
  • Instruct and assist patients with active/passive exercises, muscle re-education, gait, functional activities, ADL, transfers, safety, and prosthetic training.
  • Observe, record, and report patient responses and condition changes to the supervising PT, nurse, and/or physician. Coordinate care with healthcare team members as appropriate.
  • Educate patients, families, caregivers, and team members within your scope of practice.
  • Note: Senior Living is considered outpatient care within a community setting.

Education and Experience

License Requirements

  • Current license, registration, or certification to practice physical therapy in your state.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Valid driver's license, vehicle insurance, and access to reliable transportation.
  • PA: Must have 2,000 hours of supervised patient-related experience or have worked as a PTA for at least 3 years between October 2, 2003, and October 2, 2008 (part-time acceptable if equivalent to 3 years full-time).
