We are seeking qualified candidates for a Mid Level Substation Physical Design Engineer with a strong background in high voltage substation design. Technical responsibilities will include the design of substation physical designs up to 500kV; computer modeling and analysis of electrical systems; preparation of specifications for equipment and systems; report preparation; applying codes and standards; and performing and reviewing design calculations.
Position will be responsible for leading design efforts and performing design duties with minimal supervision on multiple projects. Must be able to determine client requirements and coordinate technical efforts within discipline areas as necessary, coordinate with other disciplines as needed, manage a design budget and schedule, and be able to demonstrate proficiency in these areas.
Responsibilities
- Detailed physical design for high voltage substations including creating or modifying single line diagrams and general arrangements, detailed elevations and section views, assembly and installation details, detailed bills of materials, bid units and material counts.
- Electrical system studies and analysis (ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSLF, CDEGS, WinIGS) preferred but not required.
- Familiar with typical design software and tools (Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, Microstation) preferred but not required.
- Coordinate with other disciplines as needed.
- Perform site visits for data gathering and asbuilts.
- Write material procurement and construction specifications and evaluate contractor bids.
- Conduct factory acceptance, witness testing, and review shop drawings for specification and design conformance.
- Review client equipment and design specifications, confirming conformance with industry standards and best practices.
- Perform typical calculations such as equipment and conductor sizing, rigid bus strength, insulation coordination, grounding, and lightning protection.
- Generate engineering fee estimates.
- Provide field support during construction and commissioning.
- Mentor and teach less experienced engineers and design staff.
- Occasional overnight travel may be required for client meetings and site visits.
Qualifications
- BS from an ABET accredited university.
- 5+ years of substation physical design experience.
- Experience working directly with clients, supporting marketing proposals/efforts preferred.
- Experience managing a design budget and schedule preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Legal ability to work in the United States for any length of time.
- PE license required; ability to obtain PE within 6 months of hire.
