Position Concept

The Physical Security Operator safeguards critical electrical energy infrastructure in compliance with federal, state, and industry standards. The role emphasizes public‑ safety coordination, private‑sector field communications, and critical infrastructure protection, including familiarity with NERC CIP requirements, and ensures effective communication between internal teams and external agencies.

Storm Duty Requirements

Team members are required to participate in response and recovery activities related to emergencies and disasters to maintain service to TECO customers. Responding to storms will be considered a condition of employment. Proper compensation will be made in accordance with company rules and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee electronic security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion detection) across multiple sites, respond to alarms and incidents, dispatch security teams, and manage emergency notifications.
  • Implement and maintain security measures aligned with NERC CIP standards, provide training on security procedures, NERC CIP compliance, and emergency communications, maintain certifications, and stay current with evolving security standards and technologies.
  • Coordinate field communications during incidents, outages, and emergencies using radio, satellite, and digital platforms.
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and risk analysis for substations, generation facilities, and transmission assets; support corporate emergency management plans and participate in drills and exercises; serve as liaison with law enforcement, emergency services, and regulatory agencies.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Required: Basic instructor‑led 40‑hour telecommunicator course within three (3) months of employment; CPR/First Aid/AED certification; TWIC clearance.
  • Preferred: Completion of a formal, basic instructor‑led 40‑hour telecommunicator course or working knowledge of APCO ANS 3.103.2.2015 and APCO ANS 3.104.2‑2017 at time of employment.
Education

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience
  • Required: 4 years of experience in law enforcement, security, military, public safety communications, or communications within the physical security industry.
  • Preferred: Experience in public safety, private security communications in critical infrastructure protection and energy sector security; knowledge of NERC physical security standards.
