Job summary

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a phlebotomist to perform venipunctures and collect specimens under supervision, ensuring patient safety and accurate labeling within UMMS laboratories across Maryland.

Responsibilities include using a computerized system to log patient data, performing order entry checks, operating basic lab equipment, coordinating with clinicians, and maintaining supplies. Two years in healthcare preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Accredited phlebotomy program completed.
  • Certification as a registered phlebotomist preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Healthcare experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain venous and/or capillary blood specimens per procedure.
  • Log and track specimen collection and patient information in computerized system; label specimens.
  • Perform accurate order entry and check requisitions for data accuracy.
  • Operate simple lab equipment (e.g., centrifuge, microscope) as needed.
  • Communicate with laboratory and medical staff to resolve specimen issues and ensure proper labeling.
  • Monitor pending work and resolve specimen issues.
  • Sort and distribute laboratory reports/mail to appropriate locations.
  • Assist with inventory and requisitions for supplies; rotate stock to prevent expiration.

Education

High School Diploma or GED
Accredited phlebotomy program
Registered phlebotomist certification
