Job summary

Qualifications

• Equivalen t of four years of high school education preferred.
• One year of full time experience preferred.
• Certification eligible with a National Phlebotomy Association preferred.
• Proficient in LIS Accessioning and Reference Laboratory Send-outs.

Responsibilities

• Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure.
• Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
• Determines priority of STAT draws and ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing.
• Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
• Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload statistics.
• Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments to ensure orderly workflow.
• Under supervision, assists in training new employees and student interns in phlebotomy duties.
• Follows all department policies and safety procedures and adheres to exposure control plans.
• Acts as a receptionist when required, greeting patients and answering phones in the outpatient lab.
• Maintains daily cleanliness of equipment and department.
