Job summary

St. David’s Medical Center in Austin, TX, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to perform a range of technical and clerical tasks in the laboratory.

You will handle phlebotomy, specimen processing, plating in microbiology, histology assistance, and preparation of specimens for referral to other labs. Qualifications

• 1 year of hospital phlebotomy experience required
• High school diploma or GED required
• Phlebotomy experience required

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary collection appropriate to specific age groups
• Collect, process, and transport specimens
• Identify proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperature for each test type
• Ensure positive identification of each patient and respective samples
• Keep collection trays and outpatient collection area neat and well stocked
• Perform specimen processing for various sub departments
• Assist in microbiology, including plating cultures, setting up antigen detection assays, quality control, and maintenance checks
• Assist in histology, including performing basic procedures, performing routine maintenance, and assisting in tracking specimens
• Answer phones, relay messages, and transfer patient test results
• Distribute reports to Health Information Management, physicians, and clients
• Maintain records of standing orders for outpatients
