  • Provide patient in-processing and guidance prior to specimen collection.
  • Assist with non-phlebotomy clerical tasks in the clinic as needed.
  • Provide instruction on specimen collection for special tests when required.

Phlebotomist – PRN – Plattsburgh, NY

STGi is currently seeking a Phlebotomist to provide services at our Community Based Outpatient Clinic.

Job Summary

The general duty of the Phlebotomist is to provide phlebotomy services as well as administrative/clerical support for the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC).

Essential Functions
  • Perform a full range of phlebotomist duties, including proper venipuncture, finger‑ and heel‑stick procedures, and set‑up and completion of special test‑related phlebotomy procedures, ensuring all aspects of patient accessioning, specimen collection, processing, and distribution are performed properly.
  • Conduct patient in‑processing prior to specimen collection, including review of paperwork and providing cordial guidance and assistance.
  • Assemble equipment (tourniquet, needles, disposable containers, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, alcohol) on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
  • Verify or record patient or donor identity, converse with them to allay fear of the procedure, conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at the blood bank.
  • Provide technical oversight and training to ensure that all invasive procedures performed in the laboratory are conducted safely, sanitary, and expeditiously, with minimal discomfort for the patient.
  • Perform phlebotomy‑related administrative and clerical procedures of the Front Desk Section of the lab, fully document all samples obtained per the laboratory’s standard operating procedures, and maintain the supply inventory and cleanliness of the front desk and phlebotomy area.
  • Perform non‑phlebotomy‑related administrative and clerical support in various areas of the clinic as needed (front desk, exam rooms, Telehealth, etc.).
  • Provide instruction on patient‑centered specimen collection (24‑hour urine, occult blood testing, semen analysis, etc.) and special requirements for laboratory‑collected specimens (fasting, special diets, etc.).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of phlebotomy and collection of adequate clinical specimens, and use age‑specific techniques to obtain specimens from infants and the elderly, if applicable.
  • Recognize the type and severity of patient reactions—including syncope, vomiting, and unconsciousness—and the procedures for such instances; counsel patients on care of post‑phlebotomy complications such as hematomas.
  • Provide general clerical and administrative support coordination work for the unit.
  • Perform other work‑related duties as required.
Required Experience and Skills
  • Prefer two (2) years of current clinical experience as a phlebotomist within the last three years.
  • Possess knowledge of medical terminology to understand and communicate test requests and results.
  • Knowledge of the type and severity of patient reactions, including syncope, vomiting, and unconsciousness, and the procedures for such instances.
  • Exceptional diplomatic communication skills and experience handling difficult customer situations.
  • Detail‑oriented with the ability to multitask.
Required Education
  • Certificate of completion of a phlebotomy course.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN).
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Moderate physical activity; requires handling of objects up to 25 pounds or standing/walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Required to respond to any medical emergency within the clinic, including a fast walk or job may be necessary to provide assistance.

Pay Rate
