Responsibilities

  • Assemble and prepare phlebotomy supplies on the work tray.
  • Verify patient identity, perform interviews, and collect blood samples.
  • Provide safety oversight and training for invasive procedures.
  • Handle front desk phlebotomy-related administrative tasks and inventory.
  • Provide non-phlebotomy administrative support as needed.
  • Instruct patients on specimen collection for special tests and lab requirements.
  • Demonstrate age-specific techniques for infants and the elderly.
  • Manage patient reactions and counsel on post-phlebotomy care.
  • Provide general clerical support for the unit.

Phlebotomist - PRN

Location: Potsdam, New York

STGi is currently seeking a Phlebotomist to provide services at our Community Based Outpatient Clinic.

Job Summary

The general duty of the Phlebotomist is to provide phlebotomy services as well as administrative/clerical support for the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC).

Essential Functions
  • Perform a full range of phlebotomist duties, including proper venipuncture, finger‑stick, and heel‑stick procedures, and perform special test‑related phlebotomy procedures.
  • Ensure all aspects of patient accessioning, specimen collection, processing, and distribution are performed properly.
  • Conduct patient in‑processing prior to specimen collection, review paperwork, and provide guidance.
  • Assemble equipment (tourniquet, needles, disposable containers, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, alcohol) on work tray per procedure requirements.
  • Verify or record patient/donor identity, converse to allay fear, conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw & test blood samples.
  • Provide technical oversight and training for invasive procedures, ensuring safety, sanitation, and minimal discomfort.
  • Perform phlebotomy‑related administrative and clerical procedures at the front desk, documenting samples per SOPs and maintaining inventory & cleanliness.
  • Perform non‑phlebotomy administrative support as needed (front desk, exam rooms, Telehealth, etc.).
  • Provide patient‑centered specimen collection instruction for special specimens and laboratory requirements.
  • Demonstrate age‑specific techniques for infants and the elderly, if applicable.
  • Recognize and manage patient reactions (syncope, vomiting, unconsciousness) and counsel on post‑phlebotomy care.
  • Provide general clerical/administrative support and coordination for the unit.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills
  • Prefer 2 years of current clinical phlebotomy experience within the last three years.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology for test requests and results.
  • Knowledge of patient reaction types and appropriate procedures.
  • Exceptional diplomatic communication skills and experience handling difficult customer situations.
  • Detail‑oriented with the ability to multitask.
Required Education and Certifications
  • High school diploma.
  • Certificate of completion of a Phlebotomy course.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from AHA or MTN.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
  • Moderate physical activity; handle objects up to 25 pounds or stand/walk >4 hours per day.
  • Typically performed in a typical interior/office environment.
  • Must be able to respond to any medical emergency within the clinic.
Pay Rate

Starting at $18.17/hour.
