Phlebotomist III

PRN - 4:30am to 8:30am / Every Other Weekend

Overview

Under general supervision, performs advanced phlebotomy procedures, including blood collection via venipuncture, finger or heel sticks, and starting IVs. Ensures specimen quality and maintains patient safety and comfort following established procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Obtains venous and capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
  2. Uses computerized systems for logging and tracking specimens and patient data.
  3. Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and microscopes.
  4. Communicates effectively with laboratory and medical staff regarding specimens, ensuring proper identification, labeling, and processing.
  5. Responds promptly to STAT phlebotomy requests.
  6. Maintains physical stamina to stand and walk during procedures.
  7. Processes specimens for testing across laboratory departments as needed.
  8. Operates centrifuge, separates specimens, and stores them appropriately.
  9. Enters patient demographic data into the laboratory system, avoiding duplicate records, and orders tests per physician requests.
  10. Handles telephone inquiries about test results and specimen status.
  11. Monitors pending orders to ensure timely collection.
  12. Assists in training new personnel, completing competency assessments before shift assignment.
  13. Performs donor blood collections if applicable.
  14. Assess patients for IV placement, initiate peripheral IVs, and document all IV sites, changing sites every 48 hours, and rotating floors as scheduled.
  15. Inserts vascular access devices such as heparin locks and draws blood from these devices as required.
