Phlebotomist III

PRN - 4:30am to 8:30am / Every Other Weekend

Overview

Under general supervision, performs advanced phlebotomy procedures, including blood collection via venipuncture, finger or heel sticks, and starting IVs. Ensures specimen quality and maintains patient safety and comfort following established procedures.

Key Responsibilities

1. Obtain venous and capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
2. Log and track specimens and patient information using computerized systems.
3. Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and microscopes.
4. Communicate effectively with laboratory and medical staff to resolve issues and properly identify and label specimens.
5. Respond promptly to STAT phlebotomy requests.
6. Stand for prolonged periods and walk as needed during procedures.
7. Process specimens for testing in various laboratory departments as per procedures.
8. Operate centrifuges and store specimens appropriately.
9. Enter patient demographic data into the laboratory system, avoiding duplicates and ordering tests as indicated.
10. Respond to inquiries about test results and specimen status.
11. Monitor pending orders and ensure timely collections.
12. Assist in training new personnel, completing competency checklists, and ensuring readiness before shift assignments.
13. Perform donor blood collections if applicable.
14. Assess patients for IV site placement and initiate peripheral IVs as directed. Change IV sites every 48 hours and maintain logs.
15. Insert heparin locks and vascular access devices, drawing blood samples from them as needed.
