Job summary

Independence Health System is seeking a Phlebotomist to perform phlebotomy using a variety of techniques and accurately collect specimens from inpatients and/or outpatients. The role includes accurate data entry of orders, receipt of specimens, and processing of reports and result inquiries.

The position requires adherence to safety protocols, correct specimen labeling, timely transport, and effective communication with healthcare staff to ensure accurate laboratory results.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED or higher.
• Completion of Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant Training Program, or six (6) months of phlebotomy experience.
• Knowledge of coding, basic math, and payer/insurance benefits (preferred).
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and general office equipment (preferred).
• Medical terminology and specimen knowledge, and LIS experience (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate LIS competency by entering orders, monitoring reports, responding to errors, and looking up test codes, collection info, and physician demographics.
• Follow standard precautions when performing venous or capillary phlebotomy.
• Ensure correct patient and specimen identification using two identifiers.
• Adhere to department protocols for blood collection and post-venipuncture care.
• Respond to pages promptly based on priority.
• Perform specimen procurement techniques and assist as required.
• Support urine drug screen collections and alcohol collections per protocol.
• Deliver specimens to the laboratory in a timely manner and package samples for transport.
• Interact with healthcare providers, co-workers, and patients to expedite quality services.
• Maintain supply levels, inventory, and rotate stock to limit waste.
