Summary
Under the supervision of the Pathology Manager, Phlebotomy Supervisor, or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Performs related clerical support activities, including interviewing and instructing patients, entering data into computerized databases, and maintaining related records and reports.
Responsibilities
- Schedules venipunctures or capillary blood punctures according to priority and type of test, utilizing computer-generated collection labels and references to the Pathology Handbook to ensure proper procedures are followed, including specimen collection in proper containers and meeting special requirements.
- Verifies and identifies patients following established procedures, ensuring proper patient preparation such as fasting or special diets.
- Obtains blood samples using venipuncture or capillary techniques; may also collect other specimens like throat cultures, and may require processing samples.
- Performs coagulation tests such as bleeding times.
- Labels, wraps, and prepares samples for transportation; maintains records of sample procurement.
- Performs clerical activities such as sorting, filing, and registering patients, including interviewing patients for insurance and medical information, and providing test instructions.
- Enters patient data into the computer system, identifies billing errors, and makes necessary adjustments.
Other Information
- Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED required.
- Certification: Phlebotomy certificate through NACA or completion of a formal internship; or 6 months of phlebotomy experience in lieu of internship; or 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience in lieu of certification.
- Skills: Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants; interpersonal skills; knowledge of blood collection equipment; ability to distinguish colors; clerical skills; familiarity with blood collection procedures.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Works in in-patient care environment with walking and physical effort; exposure to odors and communicable diseases; manual dexterity required for venipuncture.
