Summary
Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units. Collects samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family-centered care and nursing services aligned with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.
Responsibilities
Performs functions related to the computer system to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens, including patient registration, test ordering, and record management. Provides instructions to patients for specimen collection, schedules venipunctures, verifies patient identity, and collects blood samples using venipuncture or capillary techniques. Labels, wraps, and transports samples according to protocols, maintains records, and follows hospital policies and universal precautions. Performs clerical activities such as answering phones, filing, and record review. Ensures compliance with all procedures, including special collection requirements and patient preparation.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certification through an accredited agency or completion of a formal phlebotomy program with internship (100 successful venipunctures) required. Alternatively, 6 months of phlebotomy experience or 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered. Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on diverse patient populations, with strong interpersonal skills. Knowledge of blood collection equipment, color recognition, and adherence to infection control protocols. Must have manual dexterity for venipunctures.
Work Environment
Work involves in-patient care settings with walking, physical effort, and exposure to odors and communicable diseases. Adherence to infection control procedures is essential. Manual dexterity is required for venipunctures.
