Job summary

AdventHealth in New Smyrna Beach, FL is seeking a Phlebotomist to perform venipuncture and specimen collection, while ensuring proper handling and labeling of samples. The role requires adherence to safety policies and active participation in department workflows.

You'll support daily operations, assist with training, and contribute to workflow efficiency under the supervision of the laboratory leadership. A phlebotomy training program is preferred, with opportunities for growth.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required or preferred.
  • Phlebotomy training program completed or in-progress preferred.
  • Experience with specimen handling and safety procedures preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and microtainer collection accurately.
  • Transport hazardous waste per policy and training.
  • Follow Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.
  • Prioritize specimens using first in, first out with stat priority when needed.
  • Label specimens correctly and ensure orders are received properly.
  • Assist with department orientation and training of staff/students.
  • Mentor new employees and ensure competency documentation.

Job Description:

Performs venipuncture and microtainer collection accurately and efficiently. Transports hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area, completing required training for proper handling and transport. Demonstrates understanding and adherence to the Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Prioritizes routine specimen receipt in the laboratory on a "first in - first out" basis, with stat and alert specimens prioritized before routine orders. Ensures specimens are correctly labeled and orders are received properly. Follows appropriate safety policies, including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Assists with department orientation and trains laboratory staff and students. Mentors new employees and ensures competency documentation is completed. Troubleshoots phlebotomy service concerns and coordinates daily workload assignments. Supports leadership with daily workflow and problem resolution. Serves as an example of professional phlebotomy performance. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask. [Required]
  • Ability and willingness to work independently as well as in a team environment. [Required]
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, etc. [Required]
  • Phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary) [Required]
  • Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English [Required]
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program [Preferred]

Education:

  • High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
  • Technical/Vocational School [Preferred]

Field of Study:

  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred

Work Experience:

  • 1+ year at adventhealth lab [Preferred]
  • 1+ year of phlebotomy experience [Required]

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS) [Preferred]
  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) [Preferred]

Pay Range:

$16.14 - $25.83
