Job summary

AdventHealth in Florida seeks a phlebotomy/Lab Support professional to join the team on a PRN night shift. You will collect specimens, prepare them for testing, and help maintain smooth lab operations across units.

This role requires careful handling of samples, attention to safety protocols, and clear communication with patients and staff. The position emphasizes teamwork, reliability, and the ability to work independently on flexible schedules, providing critical support in a high-volume,

Qualifications

Excellent communication in English with patients, staff and customers.

Responsibilities

Perform phlebotomy and sample collection for patients of all ages.
Process, transport and prepare patient specimens for testing.
Operate and troubleshoot basic lab equipment and maintain quality reporting.
Adhere to safety policies and PPE usage; handle hazardous materials as required.
Maintain accurate documentation, verification of patient IDs, and data entry.
Provide excellent customer service and staff support; train new staff as needed.

Job Description

May perform point of care testing, and associated, quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation and result reporting.
Performs various support activities to facilitate operation of assigned department or work area, which may include answering the telephone, clerical and receptionist duties.
May perform blood and/or blood component processing, storing, shipping, modifying and selecting compatible products using a validated Transfusion Information System.
May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
Collects patient, physician, and test order information to create patient accounts, verifying identification, insurance, credentials, and requirements.
May perform blood specimen collection, including phlebotomy and skin puncture for all age groups.
Receives, processes, and transports patient specimens, including centrifugation and aliquoting sample types.
Aliquots sample types and loads preanalytical instruments or delivers them to the testing department.
May perform cytopreparatory staining and accessions surgical cases with knowledge of anatomy.
May receive and set up primary specimen cultures, inoculating petri dishes for bacterial growth.
May perform periodic preventive instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures.
May clean and disinfect laboratory equipment and spaces, maintaining inventory control and supply stocking.
Participates in laboratory and hospital performance improvement activities, including evaluating new equipment and procedures.
Trains new staff and students, acting as a preceptor when assigned.
Provides resolution to customer service issues within guidelines and support education to clinical staff.
Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling.
Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of laboratory tests, laboratory ordering processes, and commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the health care industry. [Required]
Ability to process laboratory specimens with appropriate use of hospital and laboratory information systems. [Required]
Ability to evaluate collected specimens for volume, collection containers, and related measures. [Required]
Ability to accession specimens, evaluate samples for proper submission, and document issues. [Required]
Ability to manage laboratory assistants and serve as a staff resource. [Required]

Completion of a phlebotomy training program [Preferred]

Work Experience

1+ year of experience in AdventHealth Lab [Preferred]
1+ year of relevant healthcare experience [Required]
