Properly identifies patient and follows procedures for collection of specimens. Performs Venipuncture and capillary puncture to obtain blood from neonate, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Uses computer system to monitor workflow, generate specimen labels, and receive specimens. Processes paperwork in Laboratory Outpatient drawing room, Central Processing, and Laboratory Office. Enters/Edits orders on outreach specimens. Must have a valid driver’s license from the state of residence and be able to provide reliable transportation to travel to area nursing homes, healthcare facilities, and/or for home visits.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Identifies patients correctly by wristband and verbal confirmation or healthcare professional identification.
  • Verifies physician orders for accuracy.
  • Assesses each patient to determine the most suitable collection method considering age, disability, etc., for comfort and safety.
  • Prepares necessary supplies based on testing requirements before specimen collection.
  • Performs venipunctures and capillary punctures efficiently, labels specimens correctly, and assists in specimen collection when needed.
  • Prioritizes specimen collection based on urgency (routine, timed, urgent, stat) to maintain workflow efficiency.
  • Communicates specimen status to laboratory staff to ensure timely processing.
  • Manages supply needs by assessing weekly and monthly requirements and submitting orders to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Supports Central Processing functions, including sample pickup, processing, labeling, and supply management.
  • Educates patients and staff on proper specimen collection procedures and evaluates specimen quality.
  • Trains new employees and students in phlebotomy procedures.
  • Maintains personal transportation for travel to facilities and patient homes for specimen collection.
  • Follows safety regulations, promptly removes hazards, and maintains a clean work environment.
  • Performs tasks to meet departmental goals and maintains accurate testing and billing records in the computer system.
  • Communicates professionally with staff, patients, and customers.
  • Participates in ongoing education and training to stay updated on technology, disease processes, and regulations.
  • Evaluates specimen acceptability and takes corrective actions as needed.
  • Uses supplies efficiently and develops cost-effective testing protocols.
  • Ensures a safe environment by managing sharps, toxic substances, and fall hazards, especially for elderly patients.
  • Adjusts communication style to accommodate hearing difficulties in older patients.
