Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA is seeking a part-time Phlebotomy Technician to perform venipuncture and related lab procedures in a fast-paced environment. The role is non-exempt with a 20-hour weekly schedule and early morning shifts, requiring reliability and compliance with safety standards.

Responsibilities include specimen collection, ABN preparation for non-necessity tests, EKG and point-of-care testing, and accurate data entry for registration.

Qualifications

• High School graduate with phlebotomy training or equivalent experience.
• Ability to collect blood samples via venipuncture and capillary methods.
• Knowledge of ABN processes and testing guidelines.

• Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy procedures on patients using appropriate specimen collection equipment and techniques.
• Review requisitions to ensure tests meet Medical Necessity guidelines and prepare ABN with signatures.
• Performs EKG, pulse oximetry and point-of-care testing per request and maintains equipment QC.
• Processes specimens including centrifugation, labeling, and packaging.
• Provides essential patient data and insurance information for specimen registration in the ADT system.

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $19.32 - $36.70

Schedule Details: Holidays - Every Other Holiday, Sunday through Saturday, Weekends - Every Other Weekend

Scheduled Hours: 20hr/week: 3 4-hour shifts 5 AM TO 9 AM M-F and two 8-hour shifts 5 AM TO 1:30 PM and/or 5:30 AM TO 2 PM Sat and Sun every other weekend, FLEX- This is a flex position; staff may be required to travel and provide coverage at other campuses and locations.

Major Responsibilities:

• Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy procedures on patients using appropriate specimen collection equipment and techniques.
• Review requisition and orders from physicians to ensure appropriate tests are drawn and tests meet guidelines for Medical Necessity. Prepares Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for tests that do not meet Medical Necessity guidelines and obtains appropriate signatures from patient and self.
• Performs EKG, pulse oximetry and point-of-care testing procedures as requested and associated quality control and maintenance of instrumentation.
• Processes specimens including centrifugation, pour-off, aliquoting, labeling, and packaging.
• Provides essential patient data and insurance information for registration of specimens. May create registration for outreach specimens in Hospital Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) system.

Position Qualifications:

Education: High School graduate with successful completion from a recognized program for training in phlebotomy or prior documented experience performing phlebotomy.

License/Certification:

• Basic life support certification required within 3 months of employment.
• Maintenance of annual competencies in BLS.

FLEX- This is a flex position; staff may be required to travel and provide coverage at other campuses and locations based on the needs of the department.

ESSENTIAL- This is an essential patient care position requiring reliable and punctual attendance. Staff are expected to report to work during inclement weather and emergency conditions.
