Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA is seeking a Phlebotomist to collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary methods, perform EKG and point-of-care testing as required, and ensure accurate labeling and processing of specimens.

The role is non-exempt, full-time with 40 hours weekly, night shifts 10:30 PM–6:30 AM, and every other weekend/holiday. Flex coverage may require travel to other campuses based on department needs.

Qualifications

• High School diploma with phlebotomy training or documented phlebotomy experience.
• BLS certification within 3 months of employment.
• Maintenance of annual BLS competencies.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy using standard equipment and techniques.
• Reviews physician orders to ensure tests meet Medical Necessity guidelines and completes ABN when needed.
• Performs EKG, pulse oximetry and point‑of‑care testing as requested and maintains instrumentation quality control.
• Processes specimens including centrifugation, label handling and packaging.
• Provides patient data for specimen registration and may create registrations in ADT system.

Schedule Details: Holidays - Every Other Holiday, Sunday through Saturday; Weekends - Every Other Weekend

Scheduled Hours: 40 hr/week, Nights, 8-hour shifts 10:30 PM TO 6:30 AM, every other weekend/holiday. FLEX- This is a flex position; staff may be required to travel and provide coverage at other campuses or locations based on the needs of the department.

Collects blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary from patients. Performs EKG, pulse oximetry, and point-of-care testing on inpatients and outpatients as required.

Major Responsibilities

• Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy procedures on patients using appropriate specimen collection equipment and techniques.
• Review requisition and orders from physicians to ensure appropriate tests are drawn and tests meet guidelines for Medical Necessity. Prepares Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for tests that do not meet Medical Necessity guidelines and obtains appropriate signatures from patient and self.
• Performs EKG, pulse oximetry and point‑of‑care testing procedures as requested and associated quality control and maintenance of instrumentation.
• Processes specimens including centrifugation, pour‑off, aliquoting, labeling, and packaging.
• Provides essential patient data and insurance information for registration of specimens. May create registration for outreach specimens in Hospital Admission/Discharge/Transfer (ADT) system.

Position Qualifications

Education

• High School graduate with successful completion from a recognized program for training in phlebotomy or prior documented experience performing phlebotomy.

License/Certification

• Basic life support certification required within 3 months of employment.
• Maintenance of annual competencies in BLS.

FLEX- This is a flex position; staff may be required to travel and provide coverage at other campuses or locations based on the needs of the department.
