Job description

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $15.75 - $28.35

Schedule Details: Holidays - Every Third Holiday, Monday through Friday; Weekends - Every Third Weekend.

Scheduled Hours: Monday-Friday 06:00am-08:00pm, Saturday 09:00am-01:00pm.

Shift: 2 - Evening Shift, 8 Hours.

The Lab Support Tech I greets and receives patients, ascertains their needs, and appropriately directs them. This role includes computer and telephone use, clerical duties, and performing phlebotomy procedures, including blood cultures, EKGs, breath tests, MRSA, and COVID swabbing.

Major Responsibilities
Specimen Collection
  1. Collect blood samples using appropriate venipuncture techniques across all age groups.
  2. Follow departmental protocols for sample collection.
  3. Communicate difficulties or complications to supervisors and maintain professional conduct.
Specimen Receiving and Distribution
  1. Receive specimens in the computer system.
  2. Label and prioritize specimens (e.g., STAT, STROKE, CSF) accurately.
  3. Transport specimens promptly and redistribute them per protocol.
Work Area Organization
  1. Maintain a clean and organized drawing station or cart.
  2. Restock supplies at the end of each shift.
  3. Keep patient orders accessible and organized.
Specimen Registration
  1. Register all courier-delivered specimens accurately and efficiently.
  2. Troubleshoot printer issues as needed.
Computer and Test Ordering Support
  1. Demonstrate mastery of hospital information systems.
  2. Order tests accurately using knowledge of test dictionaries and panels.
  3. Communicate with departments for clarification when needed.
Telephone Support
  1. Answer and transfer calls courteously and efficiently.
  2. Ensure coverage for incoming calls at all times.
Capillary Collection
  1. Perform heel sticks and PKU collections proficiently.
  2. Ensure proper sample volume and quality.
Resource Utilization
  1. Adapt to workflow changes and staffing needs.
  2. Provide coverage for home draws, secretarial duties, and drawing stations.
  3. Offer constructive feedback to supervisors.
General Lab Duties
  1. Restock supplies and report low inventory.
  2. Use PPE appropriately and provide shift reports.
  3. Maintain procedural proficiency through annual reviews.
Emergency Room Support
  1. Use Responder 5 efficiently and work independently.
  2. Maintain PPE compliance and pager readiness.
  3. Stock supplies, train nursing staff, and ensure timely patient draws.
Age-Specific Competency
  1. Apply knowledge of growth and development stages to patient care.
  2. Demonstrate age-appropriate communication and support.
Position Qualifications
License/Certification/Education

Required:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Valid driver's license

Preferred:

  1. Phlebotomy training
  2. ASCP certification or eligibility
Experience/Skills

Preferred:

  1. Phlebotomy experience
  2. Computer and keyboard proficiency
  3. Fluent English communication skills

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

This position requires frequent standing, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and performing repetitive movements. It also requires precise motor skills, hearing, and vision. Lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing weights up to 50 lbs may be required occasionally to frequently.

This position will provide reliable coverage across all offsite locations.
