Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to collect blood samples, prepare specimens, and support the laboratory team across offsite locations. This role emphasizes accuracy, patient communication, and safety in a fast-paced hospital setting.

The position offers full-time hours with a mixed shift and opportunities to contribute to a leading health system, including coverage across multiple sites and ongoing training.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and valid driver's license.
  • Phlebotomy training and ASCP certification or eligibility preferred.
  • Experience in phlebotomy and sample collection competency.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood samples across all age groups using venipuncture.
  • Label, prioritize, and transport specimens per protocol.
  • Maintain a clean, organized drawing station and restock supplies.
  • Register courier-delivered specimens and troubleshoot printers.
  • Operate hospital information systems and order tests accurately.
  • Answer and route calls; ensure coverage for incoming calls.
  • Perform heel sticks and PKU collections.
  • Adapt to workflow changes and cover additional duties.
  • Restock supplies and report inventory; use PPE.
  • Support ER operations; maintain PPE and pager readiness.
  • Apply age-appropriate communication based on development stage.

Hiring Range: $15.75 – $28.35

Schedule Details: Holidays – Every Third Holiday, Monday through Friday; Weekends – Every Third Weekend

Scheduled Hours: 0600am-8pm Monday-Friday 0900am-5oopm Sayureday and Sunday

Shift: 4 – Mixed Shift, 8 Hours (United States of America)

Major Responsibilities

Specimen Collection

  1. Collects blood samples using appropriate venipuncture techniques across all age groups.
  2. Follows departmental protocols for sample collection.
  3. Communicates difficulties or complications to supervisors and maintains professional conduct.

Specimen Receiving and Distribution

  1. Receives specimens in the computer system.
  2. Labels and prioritizes specimens (e.g., STAT, STROKE, CSF) accurately.
  3. Transports specimens promptly and redistributes them per protocol.

Work Area Organization

  1. Maintains a clean and organized drawing station or cart.
  2. Restocks supplies at the end of each shift.
  3. Keeps patient orders accessible and organized.

Specimen Registration

  1. Registers all courier‑delivered specimens accurately and efficiently.
  2. Troubleshoots printer issues as needed.

Computer and Test Ordering Support

  1. Demonstrates mastery of hospital information systems.
  2. Orders tests accurately using knowledge of test dictionaries and panels.
  3. Communicates with departments for clarification when needed.

Telephone Support

  1. Answers and transfers calls courteously and efficiently.
  2. Ensures coverage for incoming calls at all times.

Capillary Collection

  1. Performs heel sticks and PKU collections proficiently.
  2. Ensures proper sample volume and quality.

Resource Utilization

  1. Adapts to workflow changes and staffing needs.
  2. Provides coverage for home draws, secretarial duties, and drawing stations.
  3. Offers constructive feedback to supervisors.

General Lab Duties

  1. Restocks supplies and reports low inventory.
  2. Uses PPE appropriately and provides shift reports.
  3. Maintains procedural proficiency through annual reviews.

Emergency Room Support

  1. Uses Responder 5 efficiently and works independently.
  2. Maintains PPE compliance and pager readiness.
  3. Stocks supplies, trains nursing staff, and ensures timely patient draws.

Age‑Specific Competency

  1. Applies knowledge of growth and development stages to patient care.
  2. Demonstrates age‑appropriate communication and support.
Position Qualifications

License/Certification/Education

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred:

  • Phlebotomy training
  • ASCP certification or eligibility

Experience/Skills

Preferred:

  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Computer and keyboard proficiency
  • Fluent English communication skills

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department‑specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

This position will provide coverage across all offsite locations.

Schedule includes every third weekend requirement.
