Adheres to Hospital’s Policies and Procedures and Philosophy of Care. Consistently exhibits professional conduct that is a behavior-based expression of the hospital’s Standards of Excellence. Assumes responsibility for obtaining blood from patients by venipuncture, toe, heel, or finger sticks in a variety of collection tubes or capillaries, some of which contain preservatives or anticoagulants. Provides patient care services adjusted appropriately to the age of the patient. Assumes responsibility for actively contributing to the lab's productivity and cost. Sets up and services all clerical functions of the lab.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:
High school graduate. Must possess active Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist Certification. If does not possess on date of hire, must begin a training program at time of hire that meets WAC requirements, complete the Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist Certification training program, and submit an application to the DOH within 90 days of starting the phlebotomy training program. Requires current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Works with syringes, needles, vacutainer tubes, capillary tubes, lancets, stopwatch, glucometers, centrifuges, other laboratory equipment, and computer. Requires excellent venipuncture skills. Requires office/clerical skills. May set up specimens under supervision of Medical Technologist. Use of personal protective equipment as appropriate, documentation of immunization/immunity against hepatitis B, and training related to blood-borne pathogens is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:
Adheres to all State and Federal regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and BBP. Works in clinical laboratory and patient care areas. Stressful pressure episodes. Sometimes encounters combative or uncooperative patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel. Hazards include exposure to infectious agents and risk of injury or harm from needle sticks and chemical agents.
WORK CONTACT GROUP:
All hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel, and medical staff.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Moderate amounts of sitting, standing, and walking. Requires fine motor coordination, clear speech, normal hearing, and good visual acuity, including color perception. Light lifting up to 50 pounds.
