Qualifications

Responsibilities

The Phlebotomist II must meet the state regulatory certification requirements to work in the clinical laboratory. The Certified Phlebotomy Technician II primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining blood specimens for analysis in the clinical laboratory and works under the supervision of the Laboratory Director/Manager/Supervisor. Responsibilities include:

  1. Performing computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
  2. Possessing adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
  3. Demonstrating good communication skills and telephone etiquette when greeting patients and visitors in a polite and friendly manner.
  4. Demonstrating proper phlebotomy technique and use of equipment for collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
  5. Processing microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
  6. Processing specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
  7. Stocking and ordering routine supplies.
  8. Maintaining cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
  9. Processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
  10. Assisting with sample pickup at hospital/OR, sorting samples for analysis, and related tasks such as inventory management, supply replenishment, mail delivery, faxing, and product deliveries.
  11. Potentially working across multiple departments or night/graveyard shifts.
  12. Performing point-of-care testing after training and documented competency.
  13. Performing other tasks as assigned by the department manager/director.

Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

2. Current and valid state certification as a CPT, required.

3. BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current, required.

4. Minimum of two (2) years of clinical laboratory experience, required.
