Summary

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making work flow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities

1. Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information.
2. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
3. Explain the venipuncture (blood drawing) process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine, fecal) clearly and courteously.
4. Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
5. Understand all physicians' orders fully.
6. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
7. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
8. Verify test requisitions or computer labels for accuracy.
9. Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper storage temperature and labeling.
10. Follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
11. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
12. Attend annual department training.
13. Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (required in some states).
• Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 2-4 years of relevant experience.

Additional Requirements

• Availability for temp float coverage across multiple locations including Hoffman Estates, Niles, Elk Grove, Park City, Schaumburg, Addison, Chicago, Downers Grove, Elmwood Park, Willowbrook, Hinsdale, Western Springs, Bloomingdale, Skokie, Elgin, Aurora, and La Grange.
• Pediatric experience is mandatory, with 1-2 years preferred.
• Willingness to travel.
• Vaccines required: TB and Hep B (candidate may decline Hep B).
