Job description

Mass General Brigham (MGB) is a not‑for‑profit hospital system that provides patient care, research, teaching, and community service. This Phlebotomy position is responsible for collecting specimens for laboratory analysis.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the incumbent will perform the following:

  • Explain safety protocols and procedures to patients and focus on customer service.
  • Check two patient identifiers to ensure a complete match between requisitions, labels, and the patient identification card.
  • Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines.
  • Select appropriate specimen collection equipment and site for blood collection.
  • Tie tourniquet, prepare the site, and collect specimen according to the order of draw.
  • Ensure adequate mixing of specimen in tube by inversion or mechanical device.
  • Label in the presence of the patient and package transport specimens.
  • Monitor patient post‑collection, ensuring bleeding has stopped and the patient is stable.
  • Review a standard checklist before collection, checking for potential adverse reactions such as history of fainting or latex allergy.
  • Provide customer‑focused care and maintain patient privacy per HIPAA guidelines.
  • Provide additional clerical and pediatric services as trained or qualified by competency review.
  • Serve reception and clerical functions at the Specimen Collection Center front desk, including fax receipt and filing of orders, answering telephones, and placing requisitions in queue per policies.
  • Maintain adequate supply inventory and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned.
  • Complete required continuing education and mandatory life safety, HIPAA, and other training.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and demonstrate strong teamwork and communication skills.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred pediatric phlebotomy experience.
  • Graduate of a training program that includes phlebotomy skills with demonstrated competency.
  • Classified as Phlebotomist I.
