Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Support Services, the Phlebotomist I collects specimens for laboratory analysis, provides certain clerical functions, and supports the front‑desk of the Specimen Collection Center.

Responsibilities
  • Check two patient identifiers and ensure a complete match between requisitions, labels, and patient identification cards.
  • Use hand hygiene procedures according to unit guidelines.
  • Select appropriate specimen collection equipment and site for blood collection.
  • Tie tourniquet, prepare the site, and collect specimens according to the order of draw.
  • Ensure adequate mixing of specimen in tube by inversion or with a mechanical device.
  • Label specimens in the presence of the patient and package for transport.
  • Monitor patients to ensure bleeding has stopped and they are stable.
  • Review a standard checklist before collection, including checks for potential adverse reactions such as fainting and latex allergy.
  • Maintain a customer‑focused approach and prioritize patient needs.
  • Maintain patient privacy and follow all HIPAA guidelines.
  • When qualified, provide EKG, clerical and specimen transport functions.
  • When qualified, provide pediatric and ancillary services to phlebotomy operations.
  • Perform reception and associated clerical functions at the Specimen Collection Center front desk, including fax receipt and send, filing of orders, answering telephones, and placing requisitions in queue.
  • Maintain adequate supply inventory and complete monthly inventory checks as assigned.
  • Fulfill annual continuing education requirements for phlebotomists and mandatory life safety, HIPAA, and other required training.
  • Collaborate with and practice effective teamwork and communication skills with co‑workers.

• Position Type: Full Time• Schedule: Monday–Thursday 10:00am–6:30pm, Friday 9:30am–6:00pm• Sign‑On Bonus: $3,000• Work Location: 15 Parkman Street, Boston, MA

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Graduate of a training program that includes phlebotomy skills with demonstrated competency preferred.
  • Inpatient phlebotomy experience preferred.
Compensation & Benefits

Hourly pay range: $22.00 – $26.58 per hour, Grade 3. In addition to competitive base pay, this position offers comprehensive benefits, career advancement opportunities, and recognition programs.
