Phlebotomist I

Hours per Pay Period: 0.01 = per diem (as needed) (Non-Exempt)
Starting Wage: $17.00 - $21.25

The incumbent in this position is responsible for collecting and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis. Accurately obtains blood samples via venipuncture and capillary collection procedures with minimum patient discomfort. Ensures age-appropriate care is provided to patients from infant to geriatric. Ensures specimen integrity by following the laboratory’s procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing. Promotes quality patient/client relations and creates a supportive climate. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations.

This position may be eligible for a sign-on incentive.
Essential Job Functions
  • Collects and prepares patient specimens including blood, urine, sputum, and cultures. Coordinates specimen collection with physicians and/or nursing staff, especially for patients with central lines, groshong catheters, and IV-assisted draws.
  • Adheres to established guidelines and procedures for accurate patient and specimen identification, identifies non-compliance situations, and takes necessary steps to bring situations into compliance.
  • Utilizes computerized systems to enter laboratory orders, patient charges, generate reports, answer inquiries, and resolve problems.
  • Coordinates with healthcare providers for clarification of orders, test availability, turnaround times, and special procedures.
  • Provides instructions to patients regarding specimen collection at home, coordinates collection errors, and initiates follow-up measures.
  • Provides backup to laboratory positions on various shifts and as needed, including answering phones, requisition entry, routing patient orders, and specimen preparation.
  • Maintains supplies and a clean, organized work area.
  • Identifies personal growth needs, meets mandatory requirements, and supports organizational values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet department needs.
Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Minimum 16 years of age.
  • Completion of Phlebotomy Certification coursework or experience preferred; on-the-job training available.
  • Courses in mathematics and science preferred.

Certification

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 180 days of employment.
  • Completion of Phlebotomy Certification coursework or experience preferred.
