Job summary

UPMC Northwest is hiring a Limited Casual Phlebotomist to join our lab. The position offers varying shifts with no on-call requirements and requires working every other weekend and rotating holidays.

Responsibilities include specimen collection by venipuncture or fingerstick, data entry into LIS, and occasional EKGs. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma and phlebotomy certification preferred; at least 6 months of phlebotomy experience is desirable, with LIS and medical

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Phlebotomy or medical assistant certification preferred.
• Minimum 6 months phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and LIS experience preferred.
• Able to train and orient new staff.

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers courteously; respond to inquiries.
• Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heel stick and fingerstick; instruct patients on procedures.
• Demonstrate dependability and prioritize to meet department needs.
• Transports specimens and follows established safety procedures.
• Adhere to policies, including hand hygiene and safety precautions.
• Enter demographic data and test orders into the LIS; manage data accuracy.
• Train and orient new employees, students and residents as applicable.
• Inform staff or pathologists of unusual incidents.
• May perform arterial puncture and EKGs when required.
• Monitor supplies and use reagents cost-effectively.
