Job summary

UPMC Altoona is seeking a casual phlebotomist to support a variety of shifts as needed. The role includes collecting blood specimens via venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick, and may involve training new staff.

Responsibilities also include interacting with lab customers professionally, entering demographic data into information systems, and adhering to safety and quality procedures. Experience with LIS and medical terminology is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Certification in phlebotomy preferred.
• Minimum 6 months phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Medical terminology knowledge and LIS experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries promptly.
• Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick; instruct patients on collection procedures as needed.
• Demonstrate dependability and independent judgment; recognize priorities to meet department needs.
• Transport specimens from collection areas to the appropriate lab section.
• Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies on procedures, safety, and hand hygiene; follow isolation precautions.
