Job summary

UPMC Northwest is seeking a Limited Casual Phlebotomist to join our lab team. You will perform venipuncture, heel and finger sticks, and assist with specimen collection at times at off-site locations.

Responsibilities include interacting with laboratory customers, following patient identification procedures, and maintaining quality and safety standards. A high school diploma is required; phlebotomy certification and 6 months of experience are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred.
• 6 months phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Experience with laboratory information systems preferred.
• Licensure and clearances listed in posting.

Responsibilities

• Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
• Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heel stick and fingerstick; instruct patients on collection procedures when needed; may collect samples other than blood.
• Demonstrates dependability and independent judgment; prioritizes to meet department needs.
• Specimen collection may be performed off-site; transports specimens to the appropriate lab section following safety procedures.
• Adhere to lab and hospital policies on procedures, quality control, safety, hygiene and isolation precautions.
• Performs related clerical duties; uses computer functions to enter demographic info, orders, receipts, charges, and credits; verifies patient info and sample identity.
• Trains and orients new employees, students and residents as applicable.
• Informs technical staff and pathologists of unusual or problematic incidents.
• May perform arterial puncture following guidelines.
• Monitors and maintains supplies; uses reagents cost-effectively.
• May perform EKGs.
