The role may also assist with computer, courier, and clerical duties that support daily laboratory operations and works under the supervision of Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to inquiries promptly.
  • Procure appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick; instruct patients on collection procedures as needed.
  • Demonstrate dependability and sound judgment to meet department priorities.
  • Transport specimens to the appropriate laboratory sections following safety procedures.
  • Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies on procedures, quality control, safety, and hand hygiene.
  • Enter demographic information, test orders, charges, and credits into information systems; verify patient information and specimen identity.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as applicable.
  • Inform technical staff or pathologists of unusual or problematic incidents.
  • May perform arterial puncture following strict guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies; use materials cost-effectively.

Job description

UPMC Cole is seeking a Casual/Per Diem Phlebotomist to join its laboratory team. In this role, you will be responsible for collecting blood specimens from inpatient and outpatient populations, ensuring accurate specimen collection to support essential laboratory testing used in patient diagnosis and treatment. The position may also assist with computer, courier, and clerical duties that support daily laboratory operations and works under the supervision of Medical Technologists. This role requires a minimum commitment of two shifts per pay period, with day and evening shift availability (typically 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.), as well as weekend and holiday coverage as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Iteract with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Following proper patient identification procedures, procures appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick and fingerstick. As required, instructs patients on the collection procedures for laboratory specimens that are obtained by the patient, and may collect samples other than blood.
  • Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
  • Specimen collection may be performed at off-site locations. Transports specimens from on- and off-site collection areas to the appropriate section of the laboratory following established safety procedures.
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, including hand hygiene techniques and proper isolation precautions., compliance and personnel policies.
  • As required, performs related clerical duties, and utilizes various computer functions to accurately enter demographic information into the information system(s), enters test orders, receives, cancels, charges, and credits tests, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.
  • Trains and orients new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
  • Inform technical staff, supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • May also perform arterial puncture following strict collection and post collection guidelines .
  • Monitors and maintains supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; uses materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
