Job summary

WellMed, part of the Optum family of businesses, seeks a Phlebotomist in Rowlett, TX to draw blood, perform in-house testing, and prepare specimens for reference labs.

Primary responsibilities include venipuncture, specimen labeling, data entry, equipment maintenance, and adherence to safety and quality protocols. The role requires high school diploma, relevant certification, BLS/CPR, and 1+ year experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• National certification or registration as Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist.
• BLS and/or CPR certification.
• 1+ years of related experience.
• Knowledge of laboratory techniques for routine blood and urine tests.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing for quality control.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Ability to operate laboratory instrumentation.
• Ability to prepare written reports and input data into systems.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and staff.
• Ability to read and follow written instructions and protocols.
• Ability to work independently.
• Good communication and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products.
• Performs venipuncture using vacutainer, syringe and butterfly techniques; capillary punctures on patients; labels specimens.
• Conducts designated laboratory testing.
• Instructs patients on urine collection procedures; allocates urine specimens.
• Cleans and sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area.
• Inventories supplies and places orders.
• Enters laboratory data into computer system; data entry must be accurate and timely.
• Monitors biohazard waste.
• Ensures preventive maintenance on all equipment.
• Responds timely to abnormal and panic values.
• Maintains knowledge of container and volumes for specimen collection.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
