Job summary

Valley Health is seeking a per diem Phlebotomist to collect blood specimens across neonatal to geriatric patients in a fast-paced hospital setting. You will label specimens accurately, transport them to processing, and interact with patients, physicians, and staff in a professional manner.

Qualifications include a high school diploma, enrollment or completion of a phlebotomy program, BLS certification preferred, and knowledge of LIS systems.

• Demonstrates professional demeanor when interacting with patients, physicians and staff.
• Knowledge of phlebotomy best practices and patient identification procedures.
• Adheres to safety guidelines and OSHA regulations for blood borne pathogens.

Responsibilities

• Obtain blood specimens following guidelines; transport to the appropriate department.
• Ensure proper labeling and accurate specimen handling.
• Greet patients warmly and explain procedures before collection.
• Identify patient according to regulatory standards and collect from neonatal to geriatric patients.
• Follow safety procedures and observe OSHA regulations during phlebotomy.
• Demonstrate proficiency with LIS collection tools and software.

Ensures that all specimens are accurately labeled and properly sent to laboratory. Exhibits a professional demeanor with patients, physicians and employees. Consistently greets all people in a pleasant and helpful manner. Demonstrates the understanding of proper techniques for the various types of blood collection including venipuncture, capillary, heel sticks and order of draw. Identify yourself to patients, explain the procedures that you are going to perform and positively identify the patient according to regulatory standards. Proficient in collection of neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. Recollects necessary specimens according to policy. Observes established safety procedures and OSHA regulations for blood borne pathogens. Gives stats and special timed orders immediate attention.
