Job summary

Lake Charles Memorial Health System is seeking a General Lab Phlebotomist to collect clinical samples for testing, including blood, urine, and specialty collections. You will perform venipuncture and skin puncture, ensuring specimen integrity and adherence to latency targets, while maintaining devices and equipment.

The role reports to the Assistant Director of Pathology and requires good communication with patients and medical staff, with opportunities to grow within the laboratory team.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent requirement.
• 2 years of experience in a similar role preferred.
• Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
• Ability to communicate well with patients, family, peers and medical personnel.

Responsibilities

• Use and maintain mobile devices and Spectralink phones as directed.
• Meet blood culture contamination rate targets where applicable.
• Meet rejected specimen rate targets where applicable.
• Perform proper hand washing.
• Assist clerks with receiving specimens and answering phones when available.
• Meet turnaround times for STAT, AM, timed and routine orders.
• Use laboratory computer system, collection lists, kiosk system and pending logs.
• Ensure proper collection for specimen integrity.
• Recognize anatomical regions and components of the circulatory system.
• Keep blood drawing trays and equipment clean and organized.
• Perform specialized collection procedures (e.g., crossmatch, glucose tolerance, urine drug screen, PKU/T4, therapeutic phlebotomy).
• Perform blood collection using skin puncture and venipuncture.
