Qualifications

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
  • 5+ years of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Comfortable performing hard sticks.
  • Requires geriatric and pediatrics to geriatrics experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and maintain data.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients.
  • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Follow physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to tubes.
  • Package specimens for transport and store them at required temperatures.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and relay laboratory results to inquiries.
  • Update patient information and troubleshoot workflow issues.

Overview

A healthcare services provider in Washington, DC is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist for a contract assignment with strong potential to convert to a permanent role. This position plays a key part in ensuring accurate, safe, and efficient specimen collection for patients across all age groups.

What you'll do
  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and record maintenance and decontamination data
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
  • Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
  • Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required
  • Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for 100% accuracy
  • Package specimens for transport, storing them at required temperatures and following protocols to maintain specimen integrity
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend annual department trainings
  • Answer telephone calls and relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
  • Update patient information and troubleshoot workflow issues, offering recommendations as needed
