Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities.
• Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain venipuncture procedures to patients clearly and courteously.
• Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Follow physicians' orders and ensure 100% accuracy of labels and requisitions.
• Package specimens for transport and store per protocol to maintain integrity.

Overview

A healthcare services provider is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist for a contract engagement with potential for permanent placement. This is a 3 months assignment supporting a clinical lab environment, and the role is essential for ensuring accurate specimen collection and smooth patient care workflows, requiring experience with pediatrics, geriatrics and hard sticks.

What you'll do

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities
• Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
• Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
• Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
• Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperature and protocol to maintain specimen integrity
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
• Attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
