Job Summary/Overall Objectives
The Phlebotomist will perform phlebotomy utilizing a variety of techniques. This position is responsible for accurately collecting specimens from inpatients and outpatients for laboratory testing, which is vital for diagnosis and treatment. The incumbent will also ensure accurate data entry, specimen verification, and processing of reports and results.
Essential Job Functions
- Demonstrate competency in Laboratory Information System (LIS) functions, including placing orders, monitoring reports, responding to errors, and looking up test codes and patient information.
- Follow standard precautions for venous or capillary blood collection.
- Ensure correct patient and specimen identification using two identifiers.
- Follow department protocols for blood collection and post-venipuncture care.
- Respond promptly to pages, prioritizing appropriately.
- Minimize redraws and comply with redraw policies.
- Assist with specimen procurement and collection techniques, including urine drug screens and legal alcohol collections.
- Perform nasal and throat swab collections.
- Process laboratory orders, document receipt, and assess specimen appropriateness.
- Manage orders and patients during downtime to ensure testing progression.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare providers, staff, and patients to facilitate quality laboratory services.
- Answer telephones professionally, minimizing hold times and transfers.
- Stay current with departmental protocol changes to provide accurate information.
- Transport specimens timely, ensuring safe packaging.
- Manage supply orders and distribute supplies to floors as needed.
- Monitor collection and unreceived specimen lists.
- Maintain operational readiness to respond to service requests promptly.
- Inventory and rotate stock to prevent waste, monitor phlebotomy supplies.
- Perform scanning, indexing of patient orders, and prepare samples for transport, including computer work.
- Operate hospital vehicles in compliance with regulations for collection site travel.
- Participate in phlebotomy competency assessments and onboarding of new employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required Qualifications/Experience
- High School Diploma, GED, or higher education.
- Completion of a Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant Training Program or six months of phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Knowledge of coding, basic math, and insurance benefits is preferred.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and office equipment is preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, specimen handling, and laboratory information systems is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- Experience in a healthcare setting.
Licenses, Certifications & Clearances
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Act 33, 34, and 73 FBI Clearances with renewal.
Position Details
- Schedule based on operational needs; may include rotating shifts, standby, on-call.
- Local travel between system locations may be required.
